Withholding Tax on Cryptocurrency: A Look Back at Our Panel Discussion

On October 16, 2026, more than 50 participants tuned in to our online panel discussion on the planned withholding tax on crypto assets. The discussion focused on analyzing the current draft proposal from the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) from various perspectives within the financial sector.

Together with Thomas Thurnschegg, Senior Tax Specialist at Bitpanda; Franz Schober, Tax Manager for Wealth & Products at BNP Paribas; and Maximilian Klappenberger, Managing Director at CPB Software, we examined the draft and discussed its potential implications as well as issues related to its practical implementation.

In addition to the technical perspectives, there was also time for discussion with the participants: Questions from the chat were addressed and answered directly during the panel discussion.

At the end of the panel discussion, we asked our three experts a slightly different question: “If the finance minister called tomorrow and you could make one wish, what would you wish for regarding the flat-rate tax on crypto?”

Two perspectives from the concluding Q&A session:

Franz Schober | BNP Paribas “Listen to the people with hands-on experience; that way, you can avoid implementation challenges and excessive costs and effort.”

Maximilian Klappenberger | CPB Software “I would like to see sufficient lead time and clear guidelines. After all, there are many important steps between the introduction of a new tax regulation and its technical implementation.”

We will continue to monitor developments regarding the flat-rate tax on crypto assets. As soon as there is any relevant news, we would like to revisit this topic in a follow-up webinar.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our speakers for their presentations and to all participants for their interest and the professional exchange.
